Workshop “Perspectives on Agency and Participation”, IUSS Pavia, May 15-16, 2014
The workshop aims at offering an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of different views of agency and of its implications for issues of individual and collective participation. The current debate on these topics appears to be fragmented. The goal of the workshop is to bridge interdisciplinary divisions and to provide space for a fertile sharing of perspectives, which allows a better comprehension of how different ideas of agency and participation may inform the debate on justice, democracy, equality, responsibility, and sustainability.

Filippo Magni Moral oblĂgatĂon and future generations

Political Obligation
Anna Elisabetta Galeotti
1. Conceptual analysis of political obligation ( Hanna Pitkin “Obligation and Consent”, in Philosophy, Politics and Society, Blackwell, Oxford 1972) The article shows that what looks like the most promising theory of PO both concerning its origin and its justification, i.e. consent, is actually theoretically and conceptually muddled: Which consent of Whom is supposed to found PO?
2. How political obligation works: (Raz “Authority and Justification”) The issue is how political obligation determines practical reasoning and deliberation of citizens: exclusory or orverriding reasons?
3. Alternatives to consent as the justification of political obligation: a. natural duty (Rawls) b. fair-play principle (Simmons) c. critics of fair-play (Klosko)
Emanuela Ceva
1. The anarchist challenge to political obligation (extracts from R.P. Wolf, In Defense of Anarchy). The text revolves around the vexed question of whether a responsible agent may have a duty to obey an external authority without ipso facto compromising her autonomy.
2. Is political obligation content-independent? 2.a ls there a duty to obey unjust laws? (David LefkowĂtz, “On a Moral Right to Civil Disobedience”, E thics 117 (2007): 202-33.) 2.b Does political obligation trump an individual’s moral obligations? (Emanuela Ceva, “Political Justificationt hrough Democratic PartĂcĂpation: The Case for Conscientious Objection”, Social Theory and Practice, 41 (2015): 26-50)
