EPILOG 2022/2023 — April-June: On Reference-fixing and descriptive names
Dates: From the 17th of April, every Monday 11-13h
Venue: Genova, via Balbi 30, 7º floor (Ph.D. room)
Coordinator: Massimiliano Vignolo (massimiliano.vignolo@unige.it
)
Description:
What makes it the case that the thought a speaker uttering a sentence like “Bertrand Russell was a philosopher” intends to express is about a particular individual? How can you express beliefs about an orange rolling on a table in front of you only by saying things like “That is round” or “That is rolling”? Is an expression like “Jack The Reaper” a genuine proper name even though we have no acquaintance with its referent? These and similar questions will be the subject matter of our meetings. For more information, please contact the organizer.
